Training Days in August 2014: Once again we are holding a weekend offering two of our ever-popular and in demand on-farm training days. On Saturday 30 August we will be running our Alpaca Handling and Husbandry Day and on Sunday 31 August we will run a Suri Essentials day... full details of both courses are on our Training page - and if you attend both days over the same weekend the course fee is discounted.
Birthing begins for 2014: The first cria of the season was born on 22 June - so now is the perfect time to take part in one of our farm tours, or if you are considering making a purchase then most of the females on our sales list will be having cria in the next couple of months.
Training Days in April 2014: It is only a couple of weeks until our next weekend of training days. On Saturday 26 April we will be running our Alpaca Handling and Husbandry Day and on Sunday 27 April we will run a Suri Essentials day... full details of both courses are on our Training page - and if you attend both days over the same weekend the course fee is discounted.
Open Farm: We had a fantastic turn out for this year's Open Farm day on 6 April - see the Gallery page for some photos. If you missed out, then you can still visit us by joining a farm tour - bookings are essential - contact us for further information
Canberra Royal Show 2014: We took three suris to Canberra Royal this year and were pleased that all were placed in their respective classes. This included a first for Alcazar Gandulph in the light fawn junior male class; third for Birrong Zeus in the white junior male class; and Birrong Alchemy once again performed outstandingly, not only winning her class but going on to be awarded the broad ribbon for Champion Intermediate Female. Alchemy's sire Birrong Patronus is doing a fantastic job in passing on lustre, fineness and beautiful handle to his progeny. We have several females pregnant to him on our current sales list.
Training Days in April 2014: We will be holding two of our ever-popular training days in April. Open Farm 2014: Our annual Open Farm day, to celebrate Australian Alpaca Week, will this year be held on Sunday 6 April 2014, from 10am-4pm. This is the only day in the year when you can visit the farm free of charge, get up close to the alpacas or join us for a guided feeding walk at 3pm. Contact us for further details.
Suri fleece collection: We were delighted to host a suri fleece collection day on 2 February 2014, where fleeces were tested and selected for inclusion in bales which will be exported to New Zealand as part of the very exciting suri fibre processing trials. At last, by working together, Australian suri breeders are making real progress towards a commercial fibre industry - but one of our greatest challenges is providing a sufficient quantity of top quality fleece - making this an ideal time to start owning and breeding suri alpacas. Contact us for further information on future collection days or progress reports
Central West NSW Show: On 3 August 2013 we took a small team to Mudgee and four were placed in their classes. We were particularly pleased when Birrong Alchemy was awarded Champion Junior Female in a very tough section, and was commended in the final line-up for Supreme Champion by judge Wendy Billington. Alchemy is sired by our own Birrong Patronus, and was successful against females sired by some top suri males, including Pinjarra El Nino, Surilana Pythagoras and Bumble Hill Picotec. What is more, at 10 months of age she was being shown on her second fleece.
Birthing season underway: Our winter/spring 2013 birthing season is now underway, with the first cria being born on 23 June - so now is the perfect time to plan a farm tour and see the new cria. And if you are looking to buy alpacas, our special offer package prices are still available.
Reduced Price Package Deals: With our largest ever number of cria due to be born this year, we are offering some special deals on multiple purchases. Buy any two animals and get 10% off the list price. Any three - 15% discount. And any four - 20% discount. If you would like to purchase more than four - we are happy to negotiate further.
Alpaca AgGuide: Following the success of Alpaca AgSkills, published by the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) in 2011 we were delighted to be asked to write a companion volume, going into more detail on all aspects of farming alpacas - farm infrastructure, pasture and nutrition, assessing and improving fleece quality, genetics, alpaca health... and more! This book "Farming Alpacas" in the DPI's AgGuide series was published in January 2013 and we think it looks fantastic.
2012 Birthing Season: With our births finished for the year we are very pleased with the results. In particular, Thunderbolt is proving a consistently good sire, producing cria with beautiful lustre and handle, coupled with good density and lock structure. Within our Alcazar herd we also have a couple of exceptional cria sired by Surilana Mister Macusani ET - he is passing on his trademark greasy lustre to his progeny.
International Fleece Challenge 2012: We are very proud to announce that the second fleece of Birrong Patronus (one of our young stud males) was awarded third place in the white Senior Suri section, against very tough competition from around the world, in the International Fleece Show, held as part of the World Alpaca Conference held in Oxford, England. The fleece of another of our young males, Birrong Donizetti, also performed very creditably, being placed fifth in the white Intermediate class - the winner of which went on to be awarded supreme suri fleece.
2012 Show Season: The show season is underway once more... At Crookwell Fleece Show, Birrong Donizetti was awarded Champion Suri Fleece - the third year in succession that we have been awarded this accolade! At Gunning Show, the first three progeny of Birrong Knight in White Satin were all placed in their classes - 2nd and 3rd for Birrong Biba and Birrong Ruslana in the Junior Female White class and 2nd for Birrong Templar in the Junior Male White class. Biba went on to be awarded Reserve Champion Junior Female.
Alpaca Agskills: We are delighted to announce the publication of Alpaca Agskills - a NSW Primary Industries book featuring 92 pages in full colour, covering everything the new owner needs to know about alpaca care and husbandry. We are proud to have been the technical advisors for this publication and almost all the 112 colour illustrations were photographed on our farm.
Technical & Agricultural Tours: For those seriously interested in furthering their knowledge on the suri alpaca industry, whether within Australia or worldwide, we are now able to offer specialised technical and agricultural tours, tailored to your specific needs and interests. Pick from a series of modules to make up a half or full day visit. For further information on our Suri Alpaca Agritours please contact us.
Suri Farm Tours: We offer regular farm tours for individuals or groups interested in visiting a suri farm and learning all about suri alpacas. Plenty of opportunity to handle the alpacas, together with interactive and educational activities for children. For further information look at our Farm Tours page. Places on each tour are limited and must be booked in advance through Tourism Southern Highlands on 1300 657 559 or online by clicking this link.
