Alpaca AgGuide: Following the success of Alpaca AgSkills, published by the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) in 2011 we were delighted to be asked to write a companion volume, going into more detail on all aspects of farming alpacas - farm infrastructure, pasture and nutrition, assessing and improving fleece quality, genetics, alpaca health... and more! This book "Farming Alpacas" in the DPI's AgGuide series was published in January 2013 and we think it looks fantastic.
2012 Birthing Season: With our births finished for the year we are very pleased with the results. In particular, Thunderbolt is proving a consistently good sire, producing cria with beautiful lustre and handle, coupled with good density and lock structure. Within our Alcazar herd we also have a couple of exceptional cria sired by Surilana Mister Macusani ET - he is passing on his trademark greasy lustre to his progeny.
Thunderbolt's first progeny: The first progeny of Thunderbolt are now on the ground and we are very pleased with the result. Look on our Gallery page for a picutre of one of his first two cria - both solid white females.
Knight in White Satin: Our congratulations to Tammurah Lamson of GrayLeigh Alpacas and Deborah Smith and David Cooper of Shangrilah Alpacas on their purchase of Birrong Knight in White Satin.
International Fleece Challenge 2012: We are very proud to announce that the second fleece of Birrong Patronus (one of our young stud males) was awarded third place in the white Senior Suri section, against very tough competition from around the world, in the International Fleece Show, held as part of the World Alpaca Conference held in Oxford, England. The fleece of another of our young males, Birrong Donizetti, also performed very creditably, being placed fifth in the white Intermediate class - the winner of which went on to be awarded supreme suri fleece.
2012 Show Season: The show season is underway once more... At Crookwell Fleece Show, Birrong Donizetti was awarded Champion Suri Fleece - the third year in succession that we have been awarded this accolade! At Gunning Show, the first three progeny of Birrong Knight in White Satin were all placed in their classes - 2nd and 3rd for Birrong Biba and Birrong Ruslana in the Junior Female White class and 2nd for Birrong Templar in the Junior Male White class. Biba went on to be awarded Reserve Champion Junior Female.
Alpaca Agskills: We are delighted to announce the publication of Alpaca Agskills - a NSW Primary Industries book featuring 92 pages in full colour, covering everything the new owner needs to know about alpaca care and husbandry. We are proud to have been the technical advisors for this publication and almost all the 112 colour illustrations were photographed on our farm.
